The Sheila C Johnson Design Center at The New School presents Dormitorium: An Exhibition of Film Decors by the Brothers Quay. Pennsylvania natives now living and working in London, Stephen and Timothy Quay are influential stop-motion animators. Don't let the term "animators" fool you into thinking the brothers' work is cute and fuzzy. The dark, twisted films of the Brothers Quay are akin to a more deranged Tim Burton than to childhood favorite, Rankin Bass.
The dialogue-free films are seamlessly shot on small sets that are intricate, nightmarish worlds occupied by disturbing, disfigured dolls missing their eyeballs and/or scalps. If you happen to be one of those people who are spooked by old-fashioned dolls, this show is not for you! Though the narratives are elusive, the dolls definitely seem to be up to evil mischief.
The mesmerizing films have an old-school Eastern European feel to them and are accompanied by beautiful, yet occasionally menacing, scores. The films, as well as ten of the sets, are on view at the Johnson Design Center until October 4th. For more info, see The New School's website here. Also, check out Zeitgeist Films website for more info on the brothers here.
