A current show that every lover of photography and fashion absolutely must check out is Avedon Fashion 1944-2000 at New York City's International Center of Photography. I LOVED this exhibit. It absolutely trumps the tepid Model As Muse exhibit currently happening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. ICP offers a comprehensive survey of the great Richard Avedon's iconic fashion photographs featuring legendary Avedon models Dovima, Dorian Leigh, Suzy Parker, Veruschka, Jean Shrimpton and many more. The photos are both elegant and edgy and have certainly stood the test of time. They are arresting not merely because of good composition, lighting, and styling, but because they contain rich narratives enabled by the models' strong and unique personalities. There is no doubt that Avedon and his models shared a profound trust in each other as well as amazing chemistry.
Below is just a sampling of some of my favorite Avedon works featured in the show and in the accompanying catalogue. You have until September 20th to get to the ICP to admire some of the finest fashion photography ever. More info at the International Center of Photography website here.
Dovima with Elephants, 1955, Gown by Dior
Perhaps one of the most iconic and stunning fashion photographs ever!
How glamorous and fun does Dorian Leigh look here? And the hat is so au courant!
Check out model Jessica Stam sporting a similar version on the runway for Louis Vuitton's Fall 2009 collection below.
