Brooklyn-based artists Joe Bradley and Chris Martin currently have a two-person exhibit on view at Mitchell-Innes & Nash "conceived as part of an ongoing dialogue between the two painters," (from the show's press release). In lieu of a standard press release for the show, the gallery excerpted a portion of an interview between the two artists published in The Journal in Fall 2009. The casual and charming discussion focuses on Bradley and Martin's trying to describe their process, or lack thereof, in the studio.
Born in 1975 in Maine, Bradley received his BFA from RISD. He is know for his minimalist, abstract, assembled canvases, pieced together like building blocks in a simple, low tech style. Martin was born in 1954 in Washington DC and attended Yale and received his BFA from SVA. He is know for his large-scale, colorful, abstract works that often include collaged materials. The exhibit is a fun and interesting mix of Bradley's spare, simplified pieces and Martin's large, attention-grabbing canvases. Learn more at miandn.com. Through March 27th. Also, read a great interview with Martin from February 2008 from The Brooklyn Rail and see more of Bradley's work at canadanewyork.com.
