Three vibrant, large-scale sculptures by Ken Price greet you as you enter Matthew Marks' 522 West 22nd space. Nine smaller, whimsical, curvaceous sculptures occupy the rear galleries, all with "meticulously hand-finished surfaces, slowly built up over time with as many as twenty layers of paint, which are then sanded to a satin polish," (from show's press release).
Price, who was born in Los Angeles in 1935, has always incorporated "rich colors and painstakingly worked surfaces" into his "spectacular and inventive" sculptures. The works in this current exhibit were created in 2009 and composed in lively "sensual shapes" that playfully twist and loop around. With names like Zoot, Percival, Weezie, Eeezo, and Eskimo LA, the New Mexico-based artist presents a series of exuberant and charming sculptures that brighten up the gallery.
