Paris-based fashion designer Rick Owens has a devoted cult following of fashion insiders who covet and adore his minimalist, goth, architecturally tailored pieces composed in luxurious fabrics in simple shades of black, white, or grey. These fervent fans now have something more to lust after in their quest for the edgy Owens aesthetic. The Southern Californian native showed his first furniture collection in Paris in 2007, and for the first time in the U.S., is currently presenting his furniture designs at Salon 94's Upper East Side gallery.
The gothically titled Pavane for a Dead Princess was inspired by Maurice Ravel's 1899 composition for solo piano. Owens has "transform[ed] the gallery into a contemporary sleeping quarter based in part on his own Parisian home" (from show's press release). As he often does with his clothing designs, Owens has fused "the most basic materials with the most extravagant: leather and cotton in a biker jacket, for example, or alabaster and plywood in his new bedroom." Having previously worked with resin, horn, marble, bronze, leather, concrete, and cowhide in his furniture designs, Owens prominently features Spanish alabaster in his new works. For the low-lying, platform bed, Pavane for a Dead Princess, Owens "cut and assembled this rich, translucent material into a towering, curvilinear headboard." The result is a massive, stunning, showpiece worthy of any weary princess! For his smaller yet no less elegant Day Bed, the designer combined wood, bronze, and alabaster to create the chic chaise. Contrasting the cool, hard, pale alabaster pieces is Tortillon Curtain, a dark, hand-sewn "lush, floor to ceiling sheared mink curtain."
As his fashion collections continuously demonstrate, Pavane for a Dead Princess proves that Owens is the master of creating sleek, slightly edgy statement pieces that are the ultimate in luxury. Learn more at salon94.com and check out Owens' website at Rickowens.eu. Through June 25th.
