Coinciding with the release of the book Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist is Crumb's debut solo show at DCKT Contemporary. The daughter of R. Crumb and Aline Kominsky-Crumb, who both edited her monograph, the 29-year-old artist began drawing as a child. Some of Crumb's cool, early experiences include her working with her parents on Dirty Laundry Comics, producing her own Belly Button Comix, training at a French circus school, and working as a tattoo artist. Crumb's artwork tends to focus on her "current experiences" while acknowledging her "eccentric" and interesting past (from show's press release). Crumb's raw and colorful drawings often depict moments from her life in the south of France where she currently lives with her husband and son, along with memories from her times in Berkeley and New York. Her works currently on view at DCKT are mostly recent drawings and prints that show the media's influence on Crumb, with the artist's recreations of tabloid covers and magazine pages showing models, actresses, socialites, reality stars, and assorted well-known trainwrecks in an unflattering light.
Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist the book "explores the development of an artist from her earliest beginnings to the present," with Crumb discussing what it's like having two famed artists for parents and establishing herself in the artworld. Published by W.W. Norton, the monograph showcases 300 drawings and paintings created by Crumb between the ages of 2 to 28 that have been lovingly archived by her parents over the years.
