Coinciding with the Indianapolis Museum of Art's Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial, Chelsea's Andrew Edlin Gallery presents a solo exhibit featuring five of Dial's intricate and exciting mixed-media paintings and sculptures. Born in Alabama in 1928, Thornton Dial is a self-taught artist who started off working as a bricklayer, carpenter, welder, and furniture maker before transitioning to creating his mixed-media artwork that tackles issues includng "war, racism, bigotry, homelessness, [and] the affirmation of personal dignity in the face of oppression" (from show's press release).
Inspired by the "Southern, African-American tradition of homemade yard art" Dial's wall-mounted or free-standing three-dimensional works are produced using a variety of materials such as canvas, paint, cloth, wood, neckties, coat hangers, artificial plants and flowers, bones, wire, broken glass, mannequins, and much more. We All Live Under the same Old Flag and Master of Space are innovative and evocative takes on iconic symbols of patriotism. You Can't Get Away from the Shotgun House and Choices/Sunrise exhibit the artist's unique and surreal vision of ordinarily calm settings. Freedom Cloth, a sturdy, standing sculpture resembling enchanted shrubbery, is made of a dense tangle of cloth, hangers, wire, and fake leaves, blossoms, and birds. While the exhibit at Andrew Edlin may be small, Thornton Dial's elaborate artwork makes a big, powerful statement. Learn more at Edlingallery.com. Through April 30th. Extended until May 7th!
