Another spectacular exhibition by artist Doug Wheeler is currently on view at David Zwirner at 537 West 20th Street. The artist's third solo exhibit with the gallery, Encasements showcases five works composed of acrylic and neon lighting.
First conceived between 1967 - 1969, Wheeler created only twenty "light encasements." Four of the works on view here consist of 90.5" x 90.5" vacuum-formed plastic panels mounted onto a wall with neon lighting lining the edges from behind. The artist created only two, rarely seen variations featuring the illumination at the center of the panels—one of these works is included in this exhibit.
Each piece is displayed on its own, in a white room with all architectural detail—lines, edges, corners, and surrounding light obscured or omitted, immersing viewers in an ethereal, hazy aura. With slight alterations in color and tone, each work emits a different sensation. As with his larger installations, Wheeler's Encasements envelop viewers in a celestial-like atmosphere, causing them to question their perception.
Wheeler's artwork is always an exciting treat for the senses. Experience Encasements yourself before it closes 05 March 2016. Learn more at davidzwirner.com. See my posts on Wheeler's previous shows from 2012 and 2014.
