This is your last weekend to check out Transparent as Glass?, an international juried glass exhibition on view at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) gallery in Red Hook. The show was juried by Michael Endo, co-director of High Desert Observatory, a studio/gallery/education center in the Mojave Desert that focuses on sustainable arts. Queens-based glass artist Renée Radenberg curated the show. The exhibit showcases several remarkable and unexpected designs that magnify the transparency, luminosity, and depth intrinsic to glass. From vessels, sculptures, portraits, neons, and even a reproduction of a full-size loom, the artworks range from delicate to dense, with some surfaces resembling ice, metal, porcelain, or marble.
“This exhibition will illustrate for the public the complete range of glass-making art in the twenty-first century,” curator Radenberg said in a statement on the BWAC website. Increasing awareness of glasswork and the artists who create it is her mission, according to the artist’s website.
Transparent as Glass? features work by nearly 40 artists. See some highlights below.
Head over to Red Hook this weekend to catch this incredible collection of glass art before it closes. While you're there, check out Current(s), the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition's Fall 2020 Member Exhibition, and Black & White 2020, an exhibit that addresses race, politics, and the pandemic.
