Inspired by hikes with his father in the mountains of Guanajuato, Mexico and the idyllic scenery of Brooklyn's Backyard, Reyes depicts Prospect Park throughout the four seasons in a series of intoxicatingly lush landscape paintings.
The artist considers the pastoral park an "intimate space" where Brooklynites can connect with nature as well as their inner thoughts. After moving to Brooklyn, Reyes says in his artist statement, "the discovery of a natural space near home, with a river and a pond surrounded by trees, marks the beginning of this introspective journey. In this place, I would draw, paint, play, bike ride, exercise, walk to clear my mind, and reflect in solitude."

The Discovery by Miguel Reyes
Reyes' enchanting canvases exude the beauty and serenity of the park on a tranquil Sunday afternoon. All the sights and details experienced on a blissful day at the green space are keenly captured: reflections on a pond; sunlight filtering through tree branches; birds resting on a lamppost; children playing; bicyclists buzzing by; a couple deep in conversation; a man walking his dog. To "emphasize the grandeur of nature," Reyes paints his human and animal figures at a reduced scale, creating a tiny cast of characters amongst tall, magnificent trees and vast, vibrantly green lawns. "The paintings presented here are not intended to be a catalog of activities in Prospect Park; rather, they represent a personal experience, what I observe and am drawn to on my excursions through the park."
Originally from Mexico City, Reyes received his Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the National School of Fine Arts at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Focusing on nature and our relationship with the world around us, Reyes' work has been exhibited in Mexico, Spain, France and the United States.

"Each individual has their own connection with Prospect Park, their own intimate walk," Reyes notes. "In this series of landscape paintings, I only share mine, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences and encounters with nature amidst urban life."
